Gruen Doctor's Watch C-1930's Item #2581 SOLD
Highly collectable, original condition! This Gruen "Doctor's Watch" is from the 1930's and is in wonderful shape, truly outstanding given it is 90 plus years old. The offwhite dual-dial features an standard hour/minute dial on top and a large seconds dial on the bottom. Wonderful look!
These watches were originally produced as a doctor's tool watch for taking pulses (that's why it has the big seconds dial). Expensive to make and not considered to be a daily wear or a dress piece, so very few were produced. The offwhite dial features bold, Gothic Arabic markers, along with its original blued steel hand set.
The elongated case measures 21.2mm across excluding the crown, and 40.7mm from lug tip to lug tip. Please see the last photo for an idea of how it looks on the wrist (I'm 5'9'' and average build and this watch is a good size on me). The crown is original to the watch. You can tell by the style and how it fits within the cut-in of the case. The case is fully signed and is 14K white gold filled reinforced with extra gold. The last very nice detail is it retains its original glass crystal.
The watch is powered by a Swiss made Gruen 15-jewel manual wind movement, marked "Four 4 Adj". Very high grade! The movement is the caliber 377. The very same used by Rolex in their doctor's watch (the Prince). In fact Rolex and Gruen partnered in a Swiss movement factory during the 30's and shared movement made by that factory. The ONLY difference was the name stamped on the movement.
This watch is in really nice, original condition. It's certainly been worn; there is some aging to the dial finish, as well as some wear to the watchcase. But still far better than what one would expect to see from a 1930's timepiece. We paired the watch with a genuine leather strap in a rich tan with contrast stitching.
