Nivada Grenchen Antarctic 18K Gold Chronometer Item #2652 SOLD
This watch is from Nivada’s Antarctic line, which were intended as an homage to the Age of Exploration. In the late 1950’s, the world was optimistic. World War II was a thing of the past, mountains were being scaled, the Antarctic explored, and science and technology were making the impossible happen. All of these scientific achievements set the tone for what was declared the International Geophysical Year (1957). 66 countries participated, including the United States, the Soviet Union, and all of Europe. This piece is a tribute to that year of science.
The watch is housed in a 34mm solid 18K Gold case. The screw-on caseback is decorated with the IGY medallion, which features an arctic scene (icebergs, airplane, radio tower, sled, moon and stars) perfectly centered. Lots of wonderful detail! Take a look at the 6th photo down for a closeup.
Both the dial finish and hands are all original. The silver dial features a great linen finish. Lots of texture! It also features applied, faceted gold hour markers and gold dauphine hands. All in wonderful condition.
Powering the watch is a chronometer grade Swiss 17-jewel movement with automatic winding and date at 3. It is also marked “Adjusted to Three (3) Positions and Temperature”. It comes recently serviced, running well and keeping very good time. We installed a handmade Italian lizard strap in chestnut brown. The grain of the strap really brings out the all of the rich texture of the dial.
*We’ve included a couple of photos of advertisements for the Antarctic towards the end of the page.
